{"id":336,"date":"2012-02-08T12:09:48","date_gmt":"2012-02-08T16:09:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/artworksaroundtown.com\/?p=336"},"modified":"2012-02-08T12:10:16","modified_gmt":"2012-02-08T16:10:16","slug":"wheeling-artist-to-jury-international-watermedia-exhibition","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/artworksaroundtown.org\/?p=336","title":{"rendered":"WHEELING ARTIST TO JURY INTERNATIONAL WATERMEDIA EXHIBITION"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Marilyn Hughey Phillis, AWS, NWS,\u00a0 Artworks Around Town\u00a0 and Studio Gallery Director\u00a0 has been elected by the American Watercolor Society to Jury their 145<sup>th<\/sup> International Exhibition held at the Salmagundi Club on Fifth Avenue.\u00a0 She is chairman of a three man jury consisting of herself, \u00a0Henry Casselli, AWS-D.F.\u00a0 internationally known portrait painter;\u00a0 George James, AWS-D.F, Professor Emeritus from California State University and innovative contemporary painter.<\/p>\n<p>A Jury of Selection chose from over 1200 international entries approximately\u00a0120 works for this long time exhibition.\u00a0\u00a0 In the past AWS has included such renowned names as John James Audubon, George Innes, James Whistler, Winslow Homer, Thomas Moran, John Singer Sargeant, Maurice Prendergast, John Marin, Arthur Dove, Mary Cassatt, Edward Hopper,\u00a0 Georgia O\u2019Keeffe, Mark Tobey, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollack, Helen Frankenthaler,\u00a0 Adolph Dehn, Barse Miller, Milford Zornes, Ogden Pleissner,\u00a0 Chen Chi,\u00a0 Mario Cooper,\u00a0 Robert Laessig,\u00a0 Edward Betts, \u00a0Andrew Wyeth,\u00a0 and many other notables respected in the use of watermedia painting.\u00a0 Starting as a society for painters of watercolor, and progressing as advancements in materials were made, the society expanded its accepted media to include gouache,\u00a0 inks, egg tempera, casein, and acrylics.\u00a0\u00a0 The 100<sup>th<\/sup> Anniversary Exhibition of the American Watercolor Society was held at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1966.<\/p>\n<p>Marilyn Hughey Phillis, recipient of many national and state awards, \u00a0has served as an AWS\u00a0 Board of Directors member as well as on previous AWS selection and awards juries along with juries of other major national and regional exhibitions.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0This year she will be co-juror of the West Virginia Allied Artists Exhibition.\u00a0 She received her art training from The Ohio State University,\u00a0 The\u00a0 Toledo Museum of Art, and under a series of master watermedia teachers.\u00a0 \u00a0Phillis is listed in\u00a0 Who\u2019s Who of American Art, Who\u2019s \u00a0Who in America, and was elected to the Wheeling Hall of Fame and the Kent, Ohio Hall of Fame in 2000.<\/p>\n<p>She states,\u00a0 \u201cAs a Juror, one has a tremendous responsibility to choose award winners that depict the high points of creativity and artistic excellence along with memorable expressions of personal input.\u00a0 Works must go beyond technical excellence to profound statements of the soul of the artist.\u00a0\u00a0 AWS awards range from nearly $4000 for the top award to $500 for the lowest.\u00a0\u00a0 The Exhibition is open to the public at 47 Fifth Avenue, NY, NY daily at 1:00\u00a0 to 5:00 PM except on Monday\u2019s.\u00a0\u00a0 Two Demonstrations will be held\u00a0 Tuesday evenings at 6:00 to 8:00 PM on April\u00a0 10,\u00a0 with nationally known artists , Professor Lilit K.
